The tackle football program is led by trained volunteer coaches who strive for the  personal and athletic growth of each athlete.  Physical development, team unity, and football skill development are emphasized.  With overall player safety in mind,  players are placed on teams appropriate to their age and size as follows.

* denotes an Older/Lighter player

Older / Lighters

Older / Lighter players are players who are small for their age and are allowed to play with a younger age group accordingly.  Youth football is one of the only sports to categorize players this way so that all participants are matched to their age and weight.  Ages and weights are strictly monitored by the League, and all players are weighed in before the season and before every game.

The maximum team size is set by the conference at 35 players. If more than 35 players try-out, some must be released by the end of August before final weigh-ins and certification. Released players will receive a free Try-Out Coupon for the following year's season.

Equipment

The Marauders provide all essential equipment for the football player with the exception of personal or optional items.

Marauders football players are heavily padded against injury.  The uniform starts with an elastic girdle which holds hip and tailbone pads.  Over the girdle the game pants are worn which also holds thigh and  knee pads.  The shoulder pads protect the shoulders and collarbones and take almost all of the impact during tackling.   A newly reconditioned and certified helmet completes the padding.  Our shoulder pads and helmets are all custom-fitted to each individual player during the equipment handout session following the first week of practice. Mandatory personal items are football cleats that must have rubber molded cleats, not metal or screw-on cleats.  Appropriate youth football shoes can be found at Sports Authority, Big-5 or Sports 4 All outlets.

Many players add optional items for greater protection, such as rib protectors, forearm pads, gloves (white or grey palm, NCAA approved only), upgraded mouth guards or neck protectors.  These items can be found at the same outlets as above, and while they provide greater protection they can also limit mobility.  It is best to not over equip a player, but only add these items if they will enhance a player’s performance in a specific position.  Cups are not mandatory but are recommended.  It is suggested that you discuss with your coach before purchasing.

Practices

All practices are held at Ygnacio Valley High School and official practice begins August 1st.   Practices run five nights a week, Monday thru Friday, from 6 pm to 8 pm the entire month of August.  After the first game (September 6th), practices move to three nights per week, with the days picked at the discretion of the head coach.  As the season progress and the days grow shorter practices move to 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Click to see larger image The initial week of practice is conditioning week, which includes strength and endurance training with helmets but no pads or contact.  Players wear their practice shimmels, handed out at registration and shorts.  After the first week, or ten full hours of conditioning, players are allowed to suit-up and contact drills begin.  For practice throughout the year, players will wear practice shimmels with their names stenciled on them and practice pants with their pads and helmets.

It is important for your athlete to bring plenty of water to practice, one to two bottles or a small cooler.  The coaches do not have water available for those players who neglect to bring their own.  Juice, soda and sugary drinks are not appropriate to keep your player well hydrated.  Proper nutrition is also important.  Players should eat a nutritious snack or meal at least 2 hours before practice.

Jamboree

Jamboree consists of practice scrimmages between teams of the DVYFC.  Squads play against each other with coaches on the field.  It is a very controlled environment meant to prepare the teams for actual game play during the regular season.  Dates for this jamboree can be found on our Calendar.

Games

The Marauders will play nine games this season, four at home and five away.  The game dates and locations can be found on the Calendar section of the website.  It is extremely important that all football players be on time for their game; weigh-ins, suiting up and stretching take up a substantial amount of time and late players may not be able to play.  Home game times are as follows: Click to see larger image

Division Arrive by Game Time
Scouts 7:30 am 8:30 am
Jr. PeeWee 9 am 10 am
PeeWee 11 am 12 pm
Jr. Midget 1 pm 2 pm
Midget 3 pm 4 pm

Games generally take 1.5 hours and consist of 4 ten minute quarters and a ten-minute halftime.

Playoffs

Playoffs are held in November for the teams with the best records and a champion team is determined at each level at the annual Turkey Bowl.

Football camps

Many Marauders like to prepare for the coming season by attending one of the local football camps.  Most are run by reputable high school programs in the area.  If you are interested in getting physically ready for the season, check-out the football camps page.
